During a consultation, I will often ask something to the effect of, “Have you thought about what sort of clothing looks you would love to be photographed in?”
It can be a wildly difficult question! Let me ease your mind. When I think about what I want to wear to an event or when I’m being photographed, I draw a blank. I go to various places to help give me ideas. Here are a few that may help.
LOOK AT PORTRAITS I’VE CREATED
That may sound a little self-serving but hear me out. If you look at the images on my portrait and boudoir pages You will see people that Have gone through this process. Some of that may spark ideas for you as well.
I love the work of artists like John Singer Sargent, Philip de László, Sir Peter Lely, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and the list could go on. If you love classic artwork, spend some time with it online or visit your favorite Museum. (you can also check out the blog I did about The Brennan House which still houses many of the families portraits through the ages).

MAGAZINES LIKE VOGUE AND VANITY FAIR
Magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair are often on the cutting edge of modern fashion. They also often have classic fashion looks that have been used for ages. I can’t tell you how many clients I get who love the suit jacket with nothing under it look. It’s a classic fashion look that is easy to do.

RED CARPET EVENTS
When people go to a red carpet event, they go all out. Seeing what people are wearing, what they accessorize with, etc can open ideas for you. Photographer Mark Seliger has been creating portraits at The Oscars for several years. I look forward to these portraits every year!
Brooke loves fashion and red carpet events. She brought that style to her portraits.
YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOWS OR MOVIES
There may be movies or TV shows that you love where you see something that makes you think “I wish I could dress like that…” (For my wife and I, it happens a lot with Downton Abbey and Tombstone) A portrait sitting is a perfect reason to do it!
THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU’VE FELT AMAZING WEARING
Have you ever noticed that when you wear something you love you walk a little taller and just feel better? I know when I wear a great suit I just feel good! That will work for your portraits too.
