Understanding the "Fully Guided" Photo Shoot

“I’m not photogenic”

“I don’t know how to pose”

“I always look mean/sad/scared in photos.”

Most people feel awkward or uncomfortable in front of a camera, especially at first.  It is not uncommon for me to be chatting with someone in the studio, they’re relaxed, we’re laughing, and then I put my face behind the camera, their face freezes, stuck in a forced smile or pained grimace. That’s why all of my portrait session are fully guided.

It’s normal not to know what to do in front of the camera, or to be worried about how you look or whether you’re “doing it wrong”. Most people don’t have the opportunity to study and practice posing, body manipulation and facial expressions, so when they get in front of the camera at their portrait session, they get hit with a bit of stage fright.

Here’s the good news! You don’t HAVE to be an expert at being “on-camera” in order to have a great time being photographed OR to end up with stunning images.  I’m not going to leave you to figure it on your own and I am not going to let a bad photo of you leave my studio. I’ll be coaching and guiding you for the entire session – you’ll be amazed at how quickly being on camera will feel completely normal and comfortable!

Posing

Even the word sounds a little daunting, doesn’t it?  It probably calls to mind either runway models striking outlandish postures or awkward, artificial pictures where you prop your chin on your hand and force a smile.  Don’t worry, we’re not going to be doing either of those.  Instead, we’ll be focusing on poses and postures that work with YOU and your body and personality –  I’ll talk you through a series poses, sometimes using  pictures of what the pose looks like for or what “pose foundation” I want. In not-so-rare situations, I’ve been known to demonstrate the pose myself (which to be honest, is normally good for a laugh or two).

Expression

Next to anxiety about how to position oneself, comes concern about how to make the “right” expression. Guess what? You’re not even going to be thinking about your expression, because I’m going to be talking to you, interacting with you and just generally distracting you from the fact that you’re on camera.  That’s how I capture you at your realest – by making sure you’re comfortable, relaxed and having a great time. If you’re having a blast during your session, the expressions are going to take care of themselves!

And Finally, Being Photogenic Is A Myth

It is not your job to step in front of my camera and “be photogenic”. It is MY job to make photos that you love.  Your only job is to relax, trust me, and have an amazing time!
